Please join our Fundraising efforts to install a new playground.
As a school community, we are still in disbelief and mourning the loss of our beloved friend and neighbor, Annie Richards. The devastating news of her passing on October 11th, 2024 came as a surprise to us all. In the days that have followed, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and fond memories shared on social media from people around the country. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to Saint Michael School or any organization that focuses on the wellbeing, personal growth and happiness of children and their families. We are deeply honored to share in keeping the memory of Annie alive through the memorial donations we have received.
Annie was a trusted counselor for numerous families in our school over the years, and she was also a very dear friend. Annie emailed us at the start of each school year to wish us well. Without fail, she would always remark at the joyful sounds of play returning to Walnut Street and she might close her emails with:
Your friendly neighbor, ~Annie
We wanted to do something meaningful with the donations we have received; one that would truly honor her legacy as a champion for children... One that would make Annie smile. What better project than the replacement of our playground!?
Our playground is in much need of renovation but with the urgency of the roof, flooring and door projects this past summer, it had to put on hold. We intend to form a committee to begin dreaming of a new playground for Walnut Street.
Annie always enjoyed watching the children play on the playground, listening to the sounds of laughter, cheering, and friendly competition as she went about her work day. The children would yell "hello" to her when she went out to collect her mail. In the evenings and during the summer, it was not uncommon to find families playing on the school playground either before or after a session with Annie. Annie supported the school with our fundraising efforts by sponsoring a yearbook ad, cheering on (and heckling) the students during the Fun Run each spring, and Annie's most cherished involvement at the school was dressing up, decorating her front walk and giving out candy to the students on Halloween.
She was always focused on the health and happiness of our students. In fact, one year she was one of the winners for our annual Super Raffle Fundraiser. Annie refused to keep her winnings, instead asking to donate the money back to the school with the request, " that we put the money towards something fun for the students, in particular something that supported their mental health in a fun way."
It is only fitting then that the generous memorial donations we've received should be earmarked to create a beautiful play space for children to enjoy in the years to come. As a specialist in the physical and mental health and well being of children, Annie knew and appreciated the benefits of a playground more than anyone. We hope that this project, dedicated to the memory of Annie Richards, will continue to be a place where children can enjoy free play, friendship, and community.
We are excited to keep you all informed as this project takes shape.
If you are passionate about this project, we are looking for members of the community to help with fundraising efforts, design, and construction. Please contact Principal Elaine Beam at [email protected]

Our playground is a source of year-round learning and play. In addition to recess, our teachers have used the playground for PE, math class and science experiments. When we host events at night, inevitably the playground fills up with children playing under the street lights. And it is not uncommon to find local families enjoying the playground in the evenings, and during the summer when school is not in session. Thank you for helping to make this space exciting, safe and accessible for years to come.
